Hearing Diagnostic Assessment
What is a Hearing Test and Discussion?
A Hearing Test and Discussion combines a full audiological assessment with an in-depth consultation. We measure your hearing across frequencies, assess speech understanding in quiet and in noise, then review the results with you. Together we explore how your hearing affects everyday activities and establish clear goals for improvement.
Why It Matters
- Precision fitting: Accurate test results allow us to programme your hearing aids specifically for the frequencies you need most.
- Personalised care: By discussing your work, social life and home environment, we ensure your devices are configured to suit your unique routines.
- Better outcomes: Understanding the test findings helps you set realistic expectations, track progress and feel confident in your hearing journey.
What to Expect
- Pure-tone audiometry – you indicate when you hear soft tones at various pitches.
- Speech-in-noise assessment – we evaluate how well you follow conversation against background noise.
- Consultation – we explain your audiogram, discuss your daily communication challenges and agree on goals for your new hearing solution.
How a Detailed Test Makes a Difference
- Effortless Conversations Everywhere
Precise tuning ensures speech is clear and easy to follow, whether you’re catching up with friends in a busy café or listening to loved ones at home. - Comfort Without the High-Pitched Whistles
Customised settings help eliminate annoying feedback sounds, so you can enjoy your day without the distraction of squealing or buzzing. - Faster, Smoother Adjustment to Hearing Aids
With clear goals and accurate programming, you’ll build confidence sooner and avoid the frustration of repeated tweaks or confusion.
Impression Taking
Impression Taking – A Foundation for Comfort and Performance
What Is Impression Taking?
Impression taking is a crucial clinical step in creating a custom-fit hearing solution. It involves gently placing a medical-grade silicone material into your ear canal to capture the exact shape and contour of your ear. The resulting mould is used to manufacture devices such as in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids, prescription earmoulds for behind-the-ear (BTE) aids, and even specialised ear protection or in-ear monitors for musicians.
Because no two ears are alike, this process ensures that your device is designed to fit you, not just an average ear.
Why Is It Important?
The quality and accuracy of your ear impression have a direct impact on how well your hearing device fits, feels, and performs. A precise fit allows for:
- A secure, comfortable hold – Your hearing aid will stay in place throughout daily activities, without slipping or causing irritation.
- An optimal acoustic seal – A well-fitted mould channels sound into your ear canal effectively, reducing leakage and enhancing clarity.
- Prevention of feedback and whistling – A tight seal helps prevent sound from escaping and re-entering the microphones, which can cause high-pitched feedback.
- Discreet appearance – Custom devices sit deeper and more naturally in the ear, improving cosmetic appeal.
Even small inaccuracies in the impression can lead to discomfort, poor sound quality, and reduced satisfaction with your hearing aid.
What Happens During the Appointment?
Impression taking is a safe and painless procedure carried out by a trained clinician. Here’s what to expect:
- Otoscopy (Ear Examination) – Before we begin, your ear canal will be examined to ensure it is healthy and free of wax or obstructions. If needed, we may reschedule the impression for another day after a wax removal appointment.
- Inserting an Otoblock – A small, soft foam or cotton dam (called an otoblock) is gently inserted into your ear canal. This sits in front of the eardrum and acts as a barrier to protect it from the impression material.
- Injection of Silicone Material – Using a small syringe, we carefully fill the ear canal and outer ear with medical-grade silicone. This material is soft, cool, and begins to cure within a few minutes.
- Removal and Inspection – Once the material has set, we remove the mould gently and inspect it for any imperfections. If the impression is incomplete or distorted, we will repeat the process to ensure accuracy.
The entire process typically takes 10–15 minutes per ear.
How a Quality Impression Shapes Your Hearing Journey
- Confidence in Comfort – A device that fits properly from day one helps you feel confident and at ease, whether you’re wearing it for a few hours or the entire day.
- Clearer Sound with Less Effort – The seal created by a custom mould helps ensure that sound enters the ear canal efficiently. You’ll notice fuller, more natural sound without having to strain or increase the volume.
- Minimised Complications Later On – Poorly fitted devices often require repeated follow-up visits for adjustments or remakes. A good impression avoids these issues, reducing delays and frustration in your hearing journey.
- Better Hygiene and Ear Health – Ill-fitting tips can trap moisture, create pressure points or irritate the skin. Custom-fitted moulds minimise these risks by distributing pressure evenly and allowing for optional venting if needed.
A Small Step With Big Impact
While it may seem like a routine procedure, impression taking plays a vital role in the success of your hearing device. Taking the time to get it right at the beginning ensures that your device is not only effective, but also comfortable and reliable. For many of our patients, this step marks the beginning of a significantly improved quality of life.
If you have concerns about the process, or have had issues with hearing aid comfort in the past, we’re here to answer your questions and ensure your impression is taken with the utmost care.
Tailored Prescription Moulds
Prescription Moulds – Where Comfort Meets Clarity
What Are Prescription Moulds?
Prescription moulds are custom-built earpieces crafted from your individual ear impression. They are designed to form a secure, comfortable seal between your hearing aid and ear canal. These moulds are typically used with behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids, and in some cases, receiver-in-canal (RIC) models when enhanced stability or sound control is required.
Every mould is unique. It is shaped to your anatomy and made from a range of materials (soft or hard) depending on your hearing needs, lifestyle, and comfort preferences. They may include a small vent to allow airflow and reduce the sensation of pressure, or be fully sealed for maximum sound retention in cases of more severe hearing loss.
Why Are Prescription Moulds So Important?
While often overlooked, the earmould is a critical link between your hearing aid and your ear. A well-designed and properly fitted mould ensures that:
- Sound is directed effectively into your ear canal, improving clarity and reducing the need for higher volume
- The device stays securely in place, even during movement or extended use
- Feedback (whistling or squealing sounds) is minimised or eliminated, which is especially important in higher amplification settings
- Comfort is maintained throughout the day, even for sensitive ears or those with irregular canal shapes
A poorly fitted or generic dome can compromise all of these benefits, leading to frustration, reduced usage, and ultimately, poorer hearing outcomes.
What to Expect During the Process
Once we have taken your ear impression, it is sent to a specialist lab where the mould is created using high-precision fabrication techniques. This process generally takes around five to seven business days.
When your mould is ready, we will schedule a fitting appointment where we:
- Check the Fit and Seal – We gently insert the mould and assess how it sits in your ear. It should feel secure but not tight or irritating. Minor adjustments can be made on the spot.
- Test Acoustic Performance – We verify that the mould channels sound appropriately and determine if any venting is needed to manage occlusion (the blocked-up sensation some patients experience).
- Teach You How to Use It – You will learn how to insert and remove the mould, how to clean it, and how to store it properly to maintain hygiene and longevity.
How Prescription Moulds Improve Your Experience
- More Natural and Clear Sound – A precise fit keeps sound from leaking and ensures you hear speech with more accuracy and less effort, whether in quiet or noisy environments.
- All-Day Stability and Comfort – Your mould is shaped to your ear alone. This means it sits snugly and securely, without causing pressure or falling out. For active individuals, this provides extra confidence throughout the day.
- Fewer Disruptions and Better Focus – With a strong seal and accurate fit, annoying whistling or feedback is significantly reduced. You can focus on conversations without distractions from your device.
- Less Need for Ongoing Adjustments – A good mould reduces the need for repeated visits due to discomfort, feedback, or slippage. It provides consistent performance from the start.
Who Should Consider a Prescription Mould?
- Prescription moulds are especially helpful for:
- Individuals with moderate to profound hearing loss
- Anyone who experiences feedback with open domes
- Patients with narrow, curved, or irregular ear canals
- Those who need a secure fit for physical activity or extended wear
- People who value cosmetic discretion through colour or material choices
Even if you have mild hearing loss, a custom mould may be recommended if comfort or sound leakage has been an issue with standard tips.
The Small Detail That Changes Everything
It is easy to focus on the hearing aid itself — the technology, the features, the app controls. But without a properly fitted prescription mould, the full potential of that technology can be lost. This small but essential piece ensures your hearing aid works in harmony with your ear, delivering sound that feels natural and effortless.
If you’re committed to hearing well, take the time to get your mould right. It is a quiet but powerful part of a truly comfortable and reliable hearing experience.
Hearing Aid Prescription Fitting
Hearing Aid Fitting – Where Technology Meets You
What Is a Hearing Aid Fitting?
A hearing aid fitting is the appointment where your hearing devices are set up and fine-tuned to match your unique hearing profile, preferences, and daily lifestyle. It is more than simply turning the devices on. It involves programming, real-ear testing, personalised adjustments, and one-on-one training to ensure your hearing aids feel natural, comfortable, and effective in your everyday life.
This is one of the most critical stages of the hearing journey. A fitting is where all the preparation, including your hearing test and any ear impressions, comes together to deliver a tailored hearing solution that works for you, not just in the clinic but in the real world.
Why Is This Appointment So Important?
Even the most advanced hearing aid cannot perform well unless it is set up correctly for your ears, your hearing thresholds, and the situations you regularly find yourself in. A proper fitting ensures that:
- Speech is clear and natural, even in noisy places
- Loud sounds are not uncomfortably sharp
- Soft sounds are audible without straining
- The devices are physically comfortable and easy to use
- You leave the appointment feeling confident, not confused or overwhelmed
Without this step, hearing aids may underperform, sound unnatural, or be rejected altogether due to frustration or discomfort.
What Happens During the Fitting?
Your hearing aid fitting typically includes the following key components:
- Initial Programming – Your hearing aids are connected to specialised software and programmed based on the results of your hearing test. The software sets amplification levels at each frequency where hearing loss has been identified.
- Real-Ear Measurement (REM) – This gold-standard verification method involves placing a thin probe microphone into your ear canal while the hearing aid is in place. It measures the exact sound reaching your eardrum to ensure it matches the prescribed amplification. This allows us to adjust the device accurately, based on your actual ear acoustics.
- Fine-Tuning Based on Listening – You will listen to different speech samples and environmental sounds while we adjust the settings in real time. We ensure speech is comfortable, background sounds are balanced, and sudden noises are not too harsh.
- Fitting and Comfort Check – We confirm the physical fit of the hearing aid, including the earpiece or mould, and make any modifications if needed to improve comfort or reduce pressure.
- Instruction and Demonstration – You will be shown how to insert and remove the devices, change batteries or use the charger, clean the hearing aids, and use any smartphone apps or remote controls linked to them.
- Discussion of Wearing Plan – Some patients need to ease into full-time hearing aid use. We may recommend a gradual increase in daily wearing time and provide tips to help you adapt smoothly.
How a Good Fitting Shapes Your Experience
- Speech That Sounds Natural – When fitted correctly, voices do not sound robotic, muffled, or overly sharp. You hear the details that matter, without being overwhelmed by the noise around you.
- Less Effort, More Confidence – Properly adjusted hearing aids reduce listening fatigue, allowing you to stay focused and engaged throughout your day without constantly asking people to repeat themselves.
- Personal Comfort from Day One – Physical discomfort is a common reason people stop wearing hearing aids. A good fitting ensures they sit securely and comfortably in your ears, from morning to night.
- Quieter Listening Without Missing Out – Instead of needing to increase volume to compensate for poor tuning, you’ll hear clearly at a comfortable level, which protects your remaining hearing and improves sound quality.
- Long-Term Success and Fewer Return Visits – A professional fitting reduces the likelihood of dissatisfaction, unnecessary returns, or frequent adjustments. It sets you up for long-term success with your devices.
What If You Skip a Proper Fitting?
Some providers may offer devices without conducting a full fitting process. While this may seem convenient, it often leads to issues such as:
- Over-amplification of environmental noise
- Under-amplification of important speech sounds
- Difficulty adapting to hearing aids
- Discomfort, feedback, or a poor physical fit
- Lack of confidence in using the device
These problems are not due to the technology itself, but rather the absence of personalisation and verification. A hearing aid fitting ensures the device works for you, in your ears, with your hearing profile.
Your Hearing, Your Life, Your Fit
A hearing aid fitting is where your device becomes truly yours. It is the moment your hearing support system is customised to fit your hearing levels, your ears, and your way of life. When done properly, it bridges the gap between technology and day-to-day communication, helping you hear more clearly, comfortably, and confidently.
If you’re starting your hearing journey, this appointment is not optional. It is the key to making sure your investment delivers real, lasting results.
Hearing Aid Counselling
What Is a Follow-Up Appointment?
A follow-up appointment takes place after your initial hearing aid fitting, typically within one to two weeks. It is a structured opportunity to review how you are adapting to your hearing aids in real-world environments and to make any necessary adjustments to improve sound quality, comfort, and ease of use.
While the initial fitting focuses on programming your devices based on your test results, the follow-up is about real-life feedback. It ensures your hearing aids are not just clinically accurate, but practically effective in your daily life.
For many patients, more than one follow-up may be recommended, particularly during the early adjustment phase. These appointments are a normal and important part of the hearing care process.
Why Are Follow-Ups So Important?
It takes time for your brain to adjust to new sounds. The follow-up allows us to respond to any unexpected issues that may arise once you start wearing your hearing aids in your normal routines. These issues are often impossible to detect during the initial fitting in the quiet, controlled setting of a clinic.
Follow-up appointments help ensure:
- Your hearing aids are performing well in real-world environments such as restaurants, meetings, and outdoor settings
- Any discomfort, whistling, or unusual sensations are resolved early
- You understand how to use and care for your devices confidently
- Your hearing goals are being met, and adjustments are made as needed
Patients who attend follow-ups consistently tend to experience faster adjustment, greater satisfaction, and longer-term success with their devices.
What Happens During a Follow-Up Appointment?
Your clinician will begin by asking you how you’ve been finding the hearing aids in different situations. We then work through any concerns you may have and make refinements where necessary.
- Listening Feedback Review – You’ll be asked about specific listening environments, such as noisy cafés, conversations at home, or phone use. This helps us understand where the aids are working well and where they may need adjustment.
- Comfort and Fit Check – We check whether the hearing aids or moulds are physically comfortable. Minor adjustments may be made to improve fit or reduce irritation.
- Device Function and Maintenance – We inspect the devices for wax, moisture, or battery issues, and reinforce cleaning and care routines. If you’re using app-connected hearing aids, we’ll ensure everything is working smoothly.
- Fine-Tuning and Adjustments – Using your feedback, we make changes to amplification, noise reduction, directional microphones, or other settings to better suit your daily environments.
- Education and Support – We clarify any questions you have about using or troubleshooting your devices, and may introduce more advanced features (e.g. streaming, programs, or manual controls) once you’re more comfortable.
How Follow-Ups Enhance Your Hearing Journey
- Better Performance in the Real World – Your environments are varied and unpredictable. Follow-ups allow us to fine-tune the devices beyond what is possible in the clinic alone.
- Increased Comfort and Confidence – If something doesn’t feel quite right, we can address it quickly. This helps prevent frustration and ensures your hearing aids feel like a helpful tool, not a hassle.
- More Natural Listening Experience – As your brain adjusts, your preferences may change. We adapt the settings so that your hearing remains balanced, natural, and aligned with your expectations.
- Fewer Long-Term Issues – Early correction of small problems means fewer major issues down the track. Patients who engage in follow-ups are less likely to stop wearing their hearing aids.
Should I Have More Than One Follow-Up?
In most cases, yes. One follow-up may be sufficient for simple adjustments, but it is common for patients, especially first-time users or those with complex hearing needs, to require several follow-up sessions over the first few months.
We tailor the frequency of these appointments to your needs. Our goal is not just to provide a device, but to ensure it genuinely improves your hearing, your confidence, and your quality of life.
A Partnership in Progress
Fitting hearing aids is not a one-time event. It is a process of continuous refinement, learning, and support. Follow-up appointments are where we listen to your experience and respond in a way that ensures the technology works for you, not just technically, but personally.
By staying connected and engaged through follow-ups, you give yourself the best chance of long-term success with your hearing aids. We’re here with you at every step.
Telehealth
What Is a Telehealth Appointment?
A telehealth appointment is a remote consultation with your audiologist using secure video or phone technology. It allows you to receive professional care and support from the comfort of your home. Depending on your hearing aids and devices, some settings may even be adjusted remotely during the session.
Telehealth is a convenient, flexible option for follow-ups, troubleshooting, minor adjustments, or general guidance, especially for those with mobility challenges, busy schedules, or those living in regional or remote areas.
When Is Telehealth Useful?
Telehealth is ideal when:
- You need a quick check-in or follow-up but cannot visit the clinic
- You are experiencing a minor issue that may not require hands-on care
- You want guidance on using an app, remote control, or feature
- You need support with cleaning, maintenance, or battery troubleshooting
- You are travelling or live at a distance from the clinic
It is also a helpful way to stay connected between in-person appointments and keep your hearing journey on track.
What Can Be Done During a Telehealth Appointment?
The appointment may vary depending on your hearing aids and the technology you are using, but may include:
- Discussion of Any Issues or Concerns – Your audiologist will ask how you have been managing and listen to any concerns you may have.
- Guidance and Education – We can demonstrate how to use your hearing aid app, change filters or domes, clean the devices, or connect accessories such as TV streamers or smartphones.
- Remote Adjustments (if supported) – If your hearing aids are compatible with remote programming, we can make real-time changes to volume, clarity, noise management, or other settings based on your feedback.
- Planning Further Care – If the issue cannot be fully resolved online, we may recommend a future in-person visit, mail-in service, or follow-up plan.
How Telehealth Supports Your Hearing Journey
- Convenience Without Compromise – You get professional support wherever you are, without needing to take time off work, travel long distances, or arrange transport.
- Faster Response Times – Many concerns can be addressed quickly, without needing to wait for the next available in-clinic appointment.
- Better Continuity of Care – Telehealth helps you stay engaged with your hearing goals and ensures you receive timely help if something changes or stops working as expected.
- Peace of Mind – Knowing you have access to support, no matter where you are, increases your confidence and makes adjusting to hearing aids less stressful.
Is Telehealth Right for You?
Telehealth is suitable for most patients, particularly for follow-up appointments, minor concerns, or learning how to use new features. It is not typically used for initial fittings, ear impressions, or physical adjustments that require hands-on care.
If you are unsure, we can guide you on whether your concern can be addressed remotely or whether an in-person appointment is more appropriate.
Hearing Care That Meets You Where You Are
Telehealth is not a replacement for quality care; it is an extension of it. It gives you access to your audiologist when you need support, guidance, or answers, no matter where you are. Whether it is a quick question or a full review, we are here to help, even from afar.
If your hearing aids are compatible with remote support or you simply need expert advice, a telehealth appointment may be the most convenient way to keep your hearing on track.
