Online Hearing Tests vs. In-Clinic Testing
Hearing tests performed by an audiologist in a clinic are designed to do more than measure your hearing ability—they also check for underlying conditions that may require medical attention.
EarDoc’s online hearing test is different. It’s intended to determine whether you’re a good candidate for our hearing solutions and to give us enough information to create your personalized hearing profile and program your devices. It does not diagnose hearing loss or any medical condition.
If your results suggest something beyond typical hearing loss, we’ll recommend that you seek further care from a qualified professional.
-
Our test measures the softest sounds you can hear at different frequencies. Background noise can interfere with these measurements, so choose a quiet environment for the best results.
(Pro tip: A closet can make a great temporary sound booth.)
-
We’ve tested many common headphones and earbuds, and they all performed well for our online hearing test. If your headphones work properly, they’ll be fine for the test.
-
In a clinic, audiologists use calibrated equipment to measure your exact hearing thresholds. At home, you likely don’t have that gear—and that’s okay. We compensate by asking you to set your device volume to 100%. This helps us interpret your hearing needs accurately and saves you a trip to the clinic.
-
Once you complete the test, our Audiology Team reviews your results and sets initial programming for your hearing devices. Over the next few weeks, as you wear your devices in real-world situations, we’ll fine-tune them based on your feedback to ensure the best possible experience.
-
No referral is needed. You can book directly with EarDoc. If your hearing loss requires medical attention, we’ll guide you to the appropriate care.
What happens after the hearing test?
You’ll receive:
A personalized walk through and discussion about your hearing goals.
Recommendations for hearing aids (if needed)
A consultation with a hearing care expert to discuss options

EarDoc uses the Client Oriented Scale of Improvement (COSI), a recognized tool for tracking hearing care results. This method focuses on the goals that matter most to you—such as hearing better in conversations, noisy environments, or on calls.
Here’s how it works:
During your initial orientation, you’ll identify the listening situations you want to improve.
At a follow-up appointment, we review your progress against those goals.
COSI ensures that we’re not just fitting hearing aids—we’re helping you achieve your personal hearing objectives and holding ourselves accountable to high standards.
In 2024, about 15% of EarDoc patients completed the COSI survey. Of those, over 91% reported improvement in every hearing category they wanted to enhance.
This approach reflects our commitment to measurable, personalized, and meaningful hearing care.
